MIDLAND, Texas  — The gunman who unleashed a shooting spree in Midland, West Texas, was found dead Friday following a lengthy standoff with law enforcement after an attack that claimed one life and injured at least nine others, according to city officials.

Authorities said the active shooter incident, which unfolded across parts of Midland before culminating near a veterinary clinic, came to an end several hours after the first shots were fired.

Police have not yet disclosed the exact circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death. Midland Mayor Lori Blong stated that investigators used drone and robotic surveillance footage to verify that the gunman was deceased.

Andrea Mendias, who works at a nearby body shop, recalled hearing what sounded like a small explosion coming from the closed veterinary clinic. She then witnessed heavily armed officers rushing into the area, with some entering the building as the operation intensified. Earlier, she said, she had heard what appeared to be at least 40 gunshots.

Video recorded by Mendias showed officers exiting an armored police vehicle and deploying robotic equipment as they secured the scene.

Meanwhile, Midland Memorial Hospital reported that four victims required surgery. Three patients were treated and later released, while two others remained hospitalized in stable condition. The full extent of the injuries and additional details about the victims have not yet been released.
