The Frenchtown Township community is facing heartbreaking news following a fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of 48-year-old Aaron L. Heiss of Flat Rock, Michigan, on Monday, August 24, 2026.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, the devastating collision occurred at approximately 10:04 a.m. on N. Telegraph Road, northeast of Hurd Road. Preliminary investigators said Mr. Heiss was driving a gray 2010 Ford Escape southwest along N. Telegraph Road when, while negotiating a curve, his vehicle crossed the center line for reasons that remain unknown. The Ford Escape then collided head-on with a red 2026 Cadillac OPTIQ traveling in the opposite direction.

The impact brought both vehicles to a stop in the roadway area. The Cadillac, operated by 83-year-old John C. Taylor of Monroe, came to rest partially on the paved and grassy portions of the shoulder, facing east. The Ford Escape rotated counterclockwise before coming to rest in the northeast lane, also facing east.

Despite the safety measures in place, the crash proved fatal for Mr. Heiss. Investigators reported that he was wearing his safety belt at the time of the collision, and the airbags in his Ford Escape deployed upon impact. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mr. Taylor was also wearing his safety belt, and the airbags in his Cadillac deployed during the collision. He was transported to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital in Trenton, where he was reported to be in serious condition.

The tragedy has left behind a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary morning on the road can change. A routine journey became a devastating collision, leaving one family grieving the loss of a loved one and another facing uncertainty as an injured driver receives medical care.

Authorities confirmed that intoxication is not considered a factor in the crash. However, the circumstances surrounding why Mr. Heiss crossed the center line remain under investigation.

Several emergency and support agencies responded to the scene, including the Frenchtown Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Michigan Department of Transportation. Members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and Chaplain Program also assisted, providing support during the difficult aftermath.

The investigation is being handled by Lieutenant Brian Quinn and Deputy Sheriffs Alec Preadmore and Steven Warren of the Traffic Services Division. Authorities continue working to establish the full circumstances that led to the deadly collision.

As investigators work to piece together what happened, the focus now turns to the family and loved ones of Aaron L. Heiss, who are left to cope with an unexpected and devastating loss. Thoughts also remain with John C. Taylor as he continues treatment for serious injuries.
