A quiet Tuesday morning in Cartersville turned into a heartbreaking scene when 31-year-old Marcus Maurice Williams was fatally wounded during an officer-involved shooting near a McDonald’s restaurant and the Parkway North, also known as Grassdale, Suites.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Bartow County deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 11, 2026, after receiving a report of a man allegedly pointing a gun at an employee of the nearby restaurant.

When a deputy arrived, authorities said the man, later identified as Williams, was located in a nearby parking lot and was reportedly still holding a firearm. Preliminary information from the GBI states that the deputy gave Williams verbal commands, but he allegedly refused to comply.

Authorities said Williams then pointed the firearm at the deputy and fired. The deputy returned fire, striking Williams.

Williams was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries, but he later died. No deputies were injured during the shooting.

The incident has left a family facing the sudden and painful loss of a loved one while authorities continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.

Because the shooting involved a law enforcement officer, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an independent investigation. The GBI is now examining the circumstances that led to the confrontation and the exchange of gunfire.

Williams’ body has been transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, which is the next step in the investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the GBI’s findings are expected to be provided to the Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

The investigation is ongoing, and the preliminary account provided by authorities may be supplemented or clarified as additional evidence is reviewed.

For Williams’ family and loved ones, however, the investigation cannot change the devastating reality that a 31-year-old man is no longer coming home. Sudden deaths often leave families struggling with shock, grief, unanswered questions, and memories that become especially painful in the days immediately following a loss.
