The Marysville community is heartbroken by the death of Akili Lewis, 46, who passed after getting stabbed

Marysville is mourning after a devastating stabbing left 46-year-old Akili Lewis dead on August 11, 2026. According to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 11:49 a.m. to the area formerly known as the Hollywood Trailer Park near the 200 block of A Street following a report of a stabbing.

Responding personnel provided emergency medical assistance to Lewis, who was transported to Adventist Health for treatment. Despite those efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The loss has left those who knew Lewis facing the painful reality of a life suddenly taken away. For his family and friends, his death is not simply an incident under investigation—it is the loss of a person whose presence, memories, and relationships can never be replaced.

Detectives with the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office responded and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault. Investigators later determined that the stabbing occurred in the river-bottom area near a transient encampment.

Authorities said witnesses reported that during the altercation, the suspect allegedly yelled racial slurs directed toward Lewis. The allegation has added another deeply disturbing dimension to an already heartbreaking death.

The investigation led detectives and members of the Sheriff’s Office POP Team to arrest 48-year-old Jesse Stewart of Marysville on suspicion of homicide. Authorities also identified an alleged hate-crime component under California Penal Code section 422.55.

As investigators worked to gather evidence, members of the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office Unmanned Aircraft Systems team and Dive Team assisted in the search for a possible weapon. Authorities said a knife believed to have been used in the assault was recovered from the Yuba River.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, and additional details have not been released.

For Lewis’s loved ones, however, the investigation unfolds against the backdrop of an immeasurable loss. Sudden violence can leave families dealing with shock, grief, anger, and unanswered questions all at once. The days ahead may be especially difficult as they try to process what happened and begin learning how to live with his absence.

Akili Lewis was more than the circumstances surrounding his final moments. He was a 46-year-old man with a life, relationships, memories, and people who cared about him. Those who knew him will carry memories of his life long after the details of the investigation fade.

During this painful time, thoughts remain with Lewis’s family, friends, and everyone affected by his death. May those grieving find strength and comfort in one another, and may the continued investigation bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss.

May Akili Lewis be remembered for the life he lived, the people he touched, and the memories he leaves behind—not only for the tragic circumstances that ended his life.
