Sunday evening brought devastating news to the family, friends, and community of Dillonvale after a tragic crash in Smithfield Township claimed the life of 29-year-old Corey Shetler. Shetler was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision and died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Steubenville Post said the collision happened at approximately 8:22 p.m. Sunday on County Road 10, about 0.2 miles west of State Route 152 in Jefferson County. Emergency crews responded to the scene as the seriousness of the crash quickly became clear.
According to authorities, Shetler was pronounced dead at approximately 9:38 p.m. His sudden passing has left loved ones facing an unimaginable loss and a community mourning a life taken far too soon.
Investigators said a Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling westbound on County Road 10 and approaching a right-hand curve. At the same time, a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound when it failed to negotiate a left curve.
The Silverado reportedly traveled off the right side of the roadway before the driver overcorrected. The pickup then crossed the centerline and entered the opposite lane, where its right side struck the right front of the Cavalier.
Following the impact, the Silverado went off the left side of the roadway and entered a ditch, eventually coming to rest facing west. The Cavalier remained in the westbound lane and partially off the right edge of the roadway.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
Multiple agencies came together in response to the devastating crash. Smithfield Township Fire, EMS and Police Department personnel assisted at the scene, along with Wells Township Police Department, Brilliant Fire/EMS, Dillonvale Fire/EMS, Mt. Pleasant Fire/EMS, Short Creek Fire/EMS, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Investigative Unit.
Despite the response of emergency personnel, Corey Shetler could not be saved. His death marks another painful reminder of how quickly a moment on the road can turn into an irreversible tragedy.
