Phillip Wasson, a veteran Richmond County deputy who was off duty at the time, was traveling on Washington Road when the collision occurred near Woodbine Drive. According to the information provided, another vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic before striking Wasson’s vehicle. The crash was so severe that Wasson was pronounced dead at the scene.

His late stepmother, Dianne Wasson, also served the community as chief of the Richmond County Board of Education Police before her sudden death in 1996.
