Early Sunday morning brought heartbreaking news to King City, California, as the community learned of the tragic death of 42-year-old Omar Tellitud Chavez. His life came to an unexpected end following a shooting that occurred shortly after midnight on August 23, 2026, leaving family, friends, and others who knew him grieving a devastating loss.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, officers with the King City Police Department and deputies with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded shortly after midnight to reports of gunshots near the Hartnell College satellite campus.
When law enforcement arrived, they located a person suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the area of 2nd Street and Lynn Street. Emergency personnel responded and attempted to provide assistance, but despite those efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Monterey County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Omar Tellitud Chavez, 42, of King City.
For those closest to Omar, the news represents far more than the details of an active investigation. It is the sudden loss of a family member, friend, neighbor, and loved one whose presence was part of the lives of others.
At 42, Omar had spent years building memories and relationships with the people around him. His life was made up of ordinary moments that may now become treasured memories for those left behind—conversations, laughter, familiar routines, and time spent together.
When a life is lost unexpectedly, loved ones are often left trying to understand how someone who was there only moments before can suddenly be gone. The shock can make the days ahead especially difficult as family and friends begin navigating a reality they never expected.
Omar’s loved ones may now find comfort in remembering the person he was beyond the circumstances of his death. Every life carries stories, relationships, memories, and moments that cannot be fully captured in an official report.
The memories shared with Omar can remain a lasting part of the lives of those who knew him. A familiar voice, a smile, a conversation, or even a simple moment that once seemed ordinary can become deeply meaningful after someone is gone.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is leading the homicide investigation and continues working to determine what happened and identify those responsible.
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or heard anything unusual around the time of the shooting to come forward. Residents and businesses in the area are also being encouraged to review surveillance cameras, doorbell-camera recordings, or other video systems that may have captured information relevant to the investigation.
Anyone with information or potentially useful footage is asked to contact Detective Erik Schumacher at 831-755-3796 or Detective Sergeant Nicholas Kennedy at 831-755-3773. Information may also be submitted anonymously through the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
As the investigation continues, Omar’s family and friends are left to face the painful loss of someone whose life mattered to them. They now carry memories of a man who was taken from them far too soon.
May Omar Tellitud Chavez rest peacefully. May his family, friends, and loved ones find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
His life mattered. His memory matters. His presence will be missed.
Gone from this world, but never forgotten.
