The Jefferson County community is heartbroken by the loss of Michael Rougier, whose passing after a tragic tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 80 has left his family, friends and loved ones devastated. Rougier, 59, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, was traveling through Union Township with his beloved Rottweiler, Diesel, when the crash occurred Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, near mile marker 74.3 on I-80 East. According to Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong, Rougier’s Freightliner tractor-trailer struck the rear of another tractor-trailer that had slowed because of traffic. Rougier was pronounced dead at approximately 4:35 p.m., with the coroner determining that he died from blunt force trauma sustained in the crash. The sudden loss has brought profound sadness to those who knew him and to others who learned of the tragedy.
