Sometimes, tragedy arrives without warning, turning an ordinary day into a moment that changes everything. For 65-year-old Marco Katic of Michigan City, Indiana, what began as a quiet afternoon in the woods of Westchester Township on Thursday, July 30, ended in a heartbreaking loss that has left those who knew him struggling to understand how such a devastating accident could happen.
Katic was in the area near the 200 block of Furnessville Road when a massive tree unexpectedly came crashing down, striking him before he had any chance to escape. A 911 call quickly brought emergency crews to the scene after a report came in of a man trapped in the brush. When Porter County Sheriff’s Police deputies arrived, they found Katic beneath the heavy timber. Medical personnel immediately assessed him, but tragically, there was nothing they could do. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that day, the Porter County Coroner’s Office confirmed the devastating cause of death. Katic suffered severe blunt force trauma to his head when the tree struck him. What had been an otherwise peaceful summer afternoon had suddenly become a fatal accident, leaving behind a family and community facing an unimaginable goodbye.
