The Stuart community is facing heartbreak following the death of 42-year-old Toni Elena-Ann Salazar, whose life was tragically cut short in a shooting that authorities are investigating as a homicide.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, law enforcement officers were dispatched to the 200 block of SW 6th Street in Stuart at approximately 3:35 p.m. on August 18 after receiving a report of shots fired. Officers from the Stuart Police Department, the Adair and Guthrie County Sheriff’s Offices, and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene.

When officers arrived, they discovered Salazar outside the home. She had suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced dead. Authorities are treating her death as a homicide.

The incident quickly became a major law enforcement response, leaving residents shaken by the violence that unfolded in their community.

According to information contained in a criminal complaint, Salazar was allegedly among two people near a gazebo when Austin Nichols Reed, 46, reportedly approached them carrying a shotgun. The complaint alleges that Reed fired the weapon, striking Salazar.

Authorities say she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

The loss of a life in such sudden and violent circumstances can leave loved ones struggling to understand how an ordinary day could turn into unimaginable grief. Behind the investigation and court documents was a woman with a family, friends, memories and people who cared about her.

For those mourning Toni, the coming days may be filled with questions, sadness and memories of the moments they shared with her. Her life cannot be reduced to the circumstances of her death. She will be remembered by those who knew her for the person she was and the place she held in their lives.

The shooting also reportedly involved another individual who escaped unharmed after an alleged attempt to fire at them was unsuccessful because the weapon malfunctioned.

The events prompted a large response from law enforcement as officers worked to secure the area and take the suspect into custody.

During the response, Iowa State Patrol Trooper Chase Carruthers encountered an armed male identified as Reed, authorities said. Carruthers was shot during the encounter and transported by ambulance to a Des Moines-area hospital.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety reported that Carruthers was in stable condition but remained hospitalized and was receiving medical treatment. He has served with the department since December 2025.

Reed was taken into custody without further incident and has been charged with first-degree murder, a Class A felony, and attempted murder of a police officer, a Class B felony.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Major Crime Unit is assisting the Stuart Police Department with the investigation.

Authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events leading up to the deadly confrontation.

The charges against Reed are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

For the Stuart community, however, the immediate reality is one of grief. One woman has lost her life, a law enforcement officer is recovering from gunshot injuries, and residents are left trying to process a tragedy that unfolded in their community.
