A devastating tragedy unfolded Wednesday night, August 19, on Interstate 84 in Tolland, Connecticut, when two young women lost their lives in a fatal collision involving a passenger vehicle and a dump truck. The victims were identified as 29-year-old Paige Cooke of Manchester, New Hampshire, and 28-year-old Kristina Murphy of Wilmington, Massachusetts. Both women were traveling together in a Kia Sportage when the vehicle crashed into the rear of a dump truck, leaving families and loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.

According to Connecticut State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. as emergency crews and troopers from Troop C responded to the scene. Preliminary information indicates that a 2006 Mack CV700 dump truck was traveling westbound in the right lane of I-84, with the Kia traveling behind it in the same lane. For reasons that remain under investigation, the Kia struck the rear of the dump truck.

The impact caused disabling damage to both vehicles. Cooke, who was driving, and Murphy, her passenger, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel. The suddenness of their deaths has made the tragedy even more painful for those who knew them and for the families now forced to cope with the loss of two lives.

The dump truck driver, 51-year-old Kwame Stewart of Manchester, was also injured and transported to Hartford Hospital for evaluation. Authorities had not immediately released further information regarding his condition.
