What was supposed to be an ordinary journey home from work became a heartbreaking final moment for Gregory Christopher II.

According to his family, Christopher was leaving his job at Roto-Rooter when a tire on his work van blew out along I-69 near the 209-mile marker. He pulled over to change the tire, unaware that the roadside emergency would become a devastating tragedy for his family.

Witnesses began calling 911 around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, after reporting what appeared to be a body near a van on the interstate. First responders arrived and found Christopher at the scene. He was pronounced dead.

His family says police told them Christopher was struck by a passing vehicle traveling at a high speed while he was changing the tire. The impact was reportedly so severe that he likely died instantly.

For the people who loved him, the shock is impossible to put into words. A simple phone call made that night has now become one of the most painful memories his family will ever carry.

Christopher was more than a man involved in a tragic highway crash. He was a husband, a father of five daughters, a son and a brother whose presence meant everything to his family.

His mother, Kristi Sockol, recalled receiving a call from her son that night. Christopher reportedly asked her to tell his daughters that he would be home later because he needed to change his tire.

Sockol described the family’s grief as unbearable, saying, “No family should ever experience the pain and unbearable grief we are feeling.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by Indiana State Police. Authorities said they are gathering information and searching for the driver responsible.
